Dan Stein was called to the bar in 2000. His practice focuses on trials and appeals. His area of expertise includes extremely serious and complex cases, working with forensic evidence in areas like DNA and psychological profiling, and making arguments related to the the exclusion of evidence due to violations of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Mr. Stein has run his own practice since 2002. He often works with other experienced counsel on large cases, drawing from lawyers in his own office, Simcoe Chambers, a high-profile association of senior criminal lawyers counsel well-known in the criminal bar.
Recent cases include R. v. Pham, where Justice Michael Code struck down the minimum sentencing laws that related to marijuana production and declared them unconstitutional; and R. v. Funes, where the Court of Appeal ordered a new trial due to an apprehension of bias on the part of the trial judge.
